In her sequel to the award-winning Book Uncle and Me (Groundwood Books, 2018), author Uma Krishnaswami’s latest novel, Birds on the Brain (Groundwood Books $11.99) for ages 9-12 years, follows bird enthusiast Reeni and her friend Yasmin, as they aim to save their city’s bird count event when the mayor plans to shut it down. This event connects thousands of birdwatchers, as they will all be coming out to count birds as part of a global movement. For a school project, they survey neighbors about Bird Count India, only to discover no one knows about the upcoming nationwide event. Determined to raise awareness and support, Reeni and Yasmin rally the community to advocate for the birds, with help from Reenie’s family and Book Uncle, a retired teacher who has a free lending library on the street corner. This humorous, triumphant tale highlights the importance of community advocacy for both human and animal residents. 9781773067391
