Patriarchy, families and identity

Salt Spring Island’s Carlie Blume is set to release her debut collection of poetry, Gigglepuss (Guernica $20) due out in April that explores toxic families, the fear of ancestral mental illness and bygone relationships. Themes include patriarchy, sexual abuse, lost love, motherhood and pop culture. Throughout it all, Blume lurches toward self-awareness with irony and at times, absurdity. She always upholds the need for human connection and self-identity. Blume graduated from SFU’s The Writer’s Studio in 2017 and her work has appeared in The Maynard, Train: a poetry journal, Ghost City Review and other journals. 978-1771837002
