New book launch event
November 01st, 2024
People’s Co-op Bookstore will be hosting the launch event of Jon Bartlett and Brian Robertson’s When Heroes Become Villains (New Star Books $18.00), at the People’s Co-op Bookstore on Commercial Drive, on Thursday, November 7, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
In When Heroes Become Villains, Jon Bartlett and Brian Robertson address the “naming” controversy in British Columbia, where prominent historical figures are being re-evaluated for actions that harmed Indigenous communities. They focus on three figures: John Sebastian Helmcken, a doctor and colonial politician linked to the devastating spread of smallpox among Indigenous populations; Joseph Trutch, B.C.’s first Lieutenant-Governor, who used his position to alienate Indigenous people from their lands to facilitate British Columbia’s entry into Canada; and William Bowser, a premier in 1915-16, who was instrumental in forcibly removing the Squamish Nation from their Kitsilano lands and deploying police against striking miners. Bartlett and Robertson argue that recognizing these darker aspects of history is crucial to reconciliation, helping current generations understand the complexities of their provincial past and work towards social justice.
