David Spaner launches book
November 01st, 2024
Vancouver author David Spaner will be launching his novel, Keefer Street (Ronsdale Press $24.95) on Saturday, November 16, at the People’s Co-op Bookstore, from 2:00 pm onwards.
In Keefer Street, Spaner writes about Jake Feldman, whose life is marked by the Spanish Civil War and the inner conflicts within families and relationships. Growing up in Vancouver’s multicultural Strathcona neighborhood during the 1930s, Jake’s early life is shaped by left-wing ideals and street politics that drive him to join international volunteers fighting fascism in Spain. However, upon his unheralded return to Vancouver, his idealism fades amidst daily life and family tensions. Decades later, a reunion with fellow veterans reignites his youthful passion, as he grapples with how to sustain idealism and live a life of purpose. Spaner vividly captures Vancouver’s working-class immigrant community, evoking the vibrancy of a neighborhood rich in diverse cultural heritage.
