Lost Haida Manga Launch

May 26th, 2026

Award-winning Haida artist and storyteller Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas will launch The Lost Haida Manga: A Compendium at Gallery Jones on Saturday, May 30 at 2:00 pm.

The new collection traces the origins and evolution of Haida Manga, Yahgulanaas’s distinctive visual storytelling form that combines Haida artistic traditions with the structure and energy of graphic novels and comics.

Bringing together black-and-white ink works, previously published material and new pieces, The Lost Haida Manga(Douglas & McIntyre $34.95) explores Indigenous sovereignty, environmental resistance and visual narrative through a contemporary Haida lens. Inspired in part by the resistance to industrial logging in Haida Gwaii, the book examines how Indigenous iconography and framelines can function as sequential storytelling. Writer and anthropologist Wade Davis contributes to the volume, which also features praise from comics journalist Joe Sacco and scholars of comics and visual culture. 9781771624671
