About Kumtuks Videos

Country = Infrastructure + Narratives.  Kumtuks believes we need to renew and support our narratives as much as our infrastructure. Kumtuks creates short videos about British Columbia history that explore new narratives and provide unique insights into our past.

What does it mean to be a British Columbian?  What does it mean to be a “good” British Columbian? Can our study of the past help us understand our future? Kumtuks explores narratives like the following:

How do we understand the American  Revolution that launched Canada and the United States in different directions?
The history of British Columbia usually begins in 1849 or 1858. Why does Kumtuks claim that this misses the main story? Is Orthodox British Columbia history as presented in textbooks more like the epilogue or the real drama?

Was the Hudson’s Bay Company a fur trading company or was it as Kumtuks claims a legitimate government in a form known as a Company State? What was more supportive and more destructive of First Nations, the Company State or the democracy  that followed?

What is the evidence that British Columbian cities have swung between the organic British and the rigid  United States models of development and that we are currently in an extreme form of the  US model?

These and other questions are explored by Kumtuks through a study of our history.

Join  us as we explore new narratives and reinvigorate old ones in our search for meaning  in British Columbia.

Kumtuks is the Chinook Wawa word for “knowledge”
