Kevin Loring’s play returns

December 05th, 2024

Written and directed by award-winning playwright, Kevin Loring (at right), Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer (Talonbooks $16.95) will run from February 20 to March 2, 2025, at the Western Canada Theatre Company in Kamloops, and later from March 6 – 16, 2025, at The Clutch (York Theatre) in Vancouver.

Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer is a sharp and humorous fable about land rights, love, and deception. Red, the last member of the Little Red Warrior First Nation, confronts a land development company encroaching on his territory, leading to a clash that lands him in jail. His court-appointed lawyer, Larry, offers him refuge at his home, sparking tension with Larry’s wife, Desdemona. However, Desdemona’s initial hostility toward Red evolves into unexpected desire, creating chaos in this tale of cultural collision and cunning trickery.

Kevin Loring, a Nlaka’pamux playwright, actor, and director from the Lytton First Nation, is a trailblazer in Canadian theatre and the inaugural Artistic Director of Indigenous Theatre at the National Arts Centre. His celebrated works include Where the Blood Mixes (2009), which won the Governor General’s Award for English-language Drama and the Jessie Richardson Award for Outstanding Original Script, as well as Thanks for Giving (2019), which was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Drama.

In addition to his writing and directing, Loring has an extensive acting career, with notable roles in plays such as Saint Carmen of the Main and The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, as well as an all-Indigenous production of King Lear at the National Arts Centre. His screen credits include Arctic Air, Health Nutz, Pathfinder, and Bones of Crows. Loring’s works span theatre and literature, with plays like Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer and Battle of the Birds, and his recent collaboration on the book Lytton: Climate Change, Colonialism and Life Before the Fire (2023), reflecting on his community’s resilience after a devastating wildfire. He continues to shape the arts as the Artistic Director of Savage Society in Vancouver and as a former co-curator of the Talking Stick Festival.
