Anosh Irani’s new play
December 05th, 2024
A production of award-winning playwright Anosh Irani’s (at right) latest play, Behind the Moon (Talonbooks $21.95) will run from March 26 to April 6, 2025, at the Touchstone Theatre in Vancouver.
In Behind the Moon, Irani explores the character of Ayub, a man haunted by his past and isolated in a cold, unfamiliar Toronto. Ayub works in a Mughlai restaurant, where his routine is disrupted by a late-night visit from a mysterious stranger, forcing him to confront the family he left behind and the dreams he abandoned. Through this lens, Irani delves into themes of love, loss, brotherhood and the complexities of starting anew. The play reflects Ayub’s emotional struggles, intensified by the harsh winter, as Irani examines the inner lives of his characters, embracing their strangeness and woundedness to uncover deeper truths about identity and resilience.
Irani is the author of four critically acclaimed novels: The Cripple and His Talismans (2004), a national bestseller; The Song of Kahunsha (2006), an international bestseller shortlisted for Canada Reads and the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize; Dahanu Road (2010), longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize; and The Parcel (2016), a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize.
Irani’s play Bombay Black (2006) received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play, as did his one-man show Buffoon (2019). His anthology The Bombay Plays: The Matka King & Bombay Black (2007) and his play The Men in White (2018) were both finalists for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama, while Behind the Moon was a finalist for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play.
His short stories have been featured in Granta and the Los Angeles Review of Books and are collected in Translated from the Gibberish: Seven Stories and One Half Truth (2019). His nonfiction has appeared in publications such as The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Guardian, and The New York Times. Irani’s work has been translated into 11 languages, and he currently teaches fiction and playwriting at the University of British Columbia’s School of Creative Writing.
