Following World War II, Black lives and the American society were transformed through the civil rights movement. Jerry Wasserman explores the shift in Life Could Be a Dream (McFarland and Company, Inc, $49.95). He shines a spotlight on the new popular African American music–electrified blues combos, rhythm and blues shouters and balladeers, gospel and doo-wop quartets. By the late fifties, rock ‘n’ roll was taking over and these sounds were being pushed aside. This book offers a look at the singers, musicians and lyrics from 1946–1956 and explores connections to the socio-political dreams of Black America. Wasserman lives in Vancouver. He is a professor at UBC, a writer and an actor. 9781476697116
