Jayne & Ricci

April 10th, 2023

Jayne Doxtater has a fulfilling career in aesthetics, two happy children and a loving marriage with the man she believes to be her true soulmate, Rick. But when she finds a box in the closet of their cozy ranch home that’s full of women’s lingerie, Jayne is stunned. Is Rick having an affair? A handsome and accomplished athlete, at first Rick insists he just enjoys cross-dressing; he even encourages Jayne to “play dress up” with him. However, after some confusing times and too many secrets, the other stiletto drops: Rick is transgender, and begins the process to transition to living openly as a woman. But is their close-knit rural community ready to meet Ricci? And what about Jayne? The emotional pilgrimage takes readers from British Columbia’s West Kootenay region to Australia, Vancouver, Montana, Whistler, and back again, as Jayne struggles to come to terms with the new parameters of her relationship. Simultaneously navigating unfamiliar experiences and trying to protect those she loves, Jayne starts to lose herself, even as Ricci finds her own way. Doxtater tells what happened in her memoir The Box in the Closet (The Self Publishing Agency $23.95). “This story isn’t something I’ve often seen nor heard: the journey alongside a person who is transitioning, from the point of view of the family, or in my case, the partner,” says Doxtater. “My intention was to honestly recount my experiences, and tell my story from a place of love.” Ultimately, this is a love story, and a journey through pain and grief to find healing and peace. 9781777642013
