Gaston set to publish new book

January 22nd, 2025

Bill Gaston’s latest book, Spying on America from Heaven, to be released by Goose Lane Editions in 2026, is a narrative non-fiction account of the author’s 11-day road trip through red-state America with his two adult sons.

The journey aims to locate the gravesite of the Gastons’ abolitionist ancestors while reflecting on cultural shifts in modern America. Blending humor, keen observation and family introspection, Bill Gaston explores human behavior and societal changes with wit and irreverence.

This new title follows Gaston’s acclaimed works, Midnight Hockey (Doubleday, 2006) and Just Let Me Look at You: On Fatherhood (Hamish Hamilton, 2018) cementing his reputation for blending personal and societal insights.

Bill Gaston is the author of seven novels and seven collections of short fiction, as well as a book of poems and two memoirs (the aforementioned Midnight Hockey and Just Let Me Look at You). His fiction has been shortlisted for the Giller Prize, and twice for the Governor General’s Award. His most recent novel, The World (Hamish Hamilton, 2012), won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. His writing has also won a National Magazine Award, the Timothy Findley Award and a CBC Literary Prize, among others. He lives in Victoria.
