Find a book, find yourself
December 01st, 2015
When you are your own marketing manager, you’ve gotta be original. So Nina Shoroplova is hiding 27 copies of her new book, Trust the Mystery: Questions, Quotes, and Quantum Wisdom, in mysterious places around the Lower Mainland—one book for each day of Advent. She started this publicity ploy on Sunday, November 29, the first day of Advent, the season leading up to Christmas.
Shoroplova describes these lost-and-to-be-found copies as “help yourself” copies. It’s a double entendre. Not only will these books be “finders keepers” copies; the books are also self-help, spiritual guides. Find a book, find yourself, etc. In exchange, Shoroplova is hoping for some feedback. “If the finders could email me back with their own greatest moment of mystery—a synchronicity, a coincidence, a knowing they couldn’t have known, a paranormal event that helped them—I will feature their story on my website,” she says.
With an endorsement by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon, Nina Shoroplova “hybrid-published” Trust the Mystery: Questions, Quotes, and Quantum Wisdom (North Vancouver: Influence Publishing 2015). But it’s not her debut as an author.
As Nina Woolliams, Nina Shoroplova wrote an important book on ranching in B.C., Cattle Ranch: The Story of the Douglas Lake Cattle Company (Douglas & McIntyre, 1979). Born in Cardiff, Wales in 1947, she came to Canada in 1969 to work as a physiotherapist and married the manager of the Douglas Lake Ranch in 1970. In 1979, as her ranching history book was published, she left to operate a sheep and cattle ranch in Australia for five years. She returned to Vancouver in 1984 and studied Communications at SFU prior to a fifteen-year career in government relations.
After taking a “body-mind-spirit” course at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, she increasingly turned to matters of spirituality and health. Remarried, she has raised four children.
