Van Book Award shortlist

The annual City of Vancouver Book Award has released its shortlist for 2023, including poetry, fiction, memoir, an art book and a graphic novel:

  • Cactus Gardens (Anvil Press) by Evelyn Lau.
  • The Foghorn Echoes (Penguin Random House) by Danny Ramadan.
  • Holden After and Before: Love Letter for a Son Lost to Overdose (Arsenal Pulp Press) by Tara McGuire.
  • Jan Wade: Soul Power (Information Office, Vancouver Art Gallery) by Jan Wade, Deanna Bowen, Wayde Compton, Daina Augaitis, Siobhan McCracken Nixon.
  • Junie (Book*hug Press ) by Chelene Knight.
  • PAWS: Mindy Makes Some Space (Razorbill) by Michele Assarasakorn and Nathan Fairbairn.

The jury included writers Molly Cross-Blanchard and Dina Del Bucchia, and Community Engagement Librarian Allan Cho.

The awards will be presented at the Vancouver Public Library (central branch) in the Alice MacKay Room on September 22, 2 – 4 pm.

ABOUT THE AWARD

Recognizing authors of excellence who contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver’s diversity, history, unique character, or the achievements of its residents, this $3,000 prize is funded by the City of Vancouver’s Publishing Reserve, which was established in 1977 as a permanent legacy for Vancouver writers and publishers. The award began in 1989.
