WW II fictional memoir launch

Amanda Hale will be reading from her latest historical fiction novel, Mad Hatter (Guernica 2019) on Tuesday, November 12 at Mainstreet Book Warehouse.
Joining Hale, will be Guernica publisher Michael Mirolla, reading from his latest book, The Last News Vendor (Quattro Books 2019).

About Mad Hatter:
The novel begins in June, 1940 when Christopher Brooke is arrested under Regulation 18B – used by the British government to intern people suspected of being Nazi sympathizers. The actual effect of 18B was to suspend the right of affected individuals to habeas corpus. Not only is Brooke’s life set on a course of disintegration, his family is harmed too. An Irish farm girl, Mary Byrne is hired on as the family’s housekeeper and the story is initially told through her observations of the wife, Cynthia Brooke and the couple’s three children. But when Mary is harshly expelled from the house upon Christopher’s release from internment, 15-month-old Katie — conceived on a prison leave and now speaking from adulthood — takes over as narrator. The marriage begins to unravel with a tragic impact on the children. Hale’s story delves into the wartime lives of Britons and tracks the aftermath through the daughter’s search for family history.
