Alli Vail makes her debut

April 02nd, 2024

Vancouver-based author Alli Vail launches her debut novel, Brooklyn Thomas Isn’t Here (Post Hill Press $25.99) on Tuesday, May 21 at the Book Warehouse in Vancouver. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the author reading and the Q&A session starts at 7:00 pm.

Vail’s novel follows the narrative of young Brooklyn Thomas as she faces a series of challenges: her best friend is missing, her career is in shambles, and she’s back living with her parents. Strangely, Brooklyn is also pretty sure that she’s mostly dead. She can’t feel her heart beating and her reflection keeps vanishing from mirrors but no one else in her life seems to notice.

While working at a doughnut shop after losing her high-paying marketing job, Brooklyn faces embarrassment in front of her crush. She also struggles to make ends meet in her parents’ basement.

To add to her woes, Brooklyn begins hallucinating about stars from her favourite TV shows who urge her to confront her past. In the face of this collision with past and present, Brooklyn must find the courage to deal with her demons and seize a second chance at life before it’s too late.

Alli Vail is a former journalist for national and provincial award-winning community newspapers. She is a content writer and marketer for literary festivals and nonprofits, and has worked in tech, video games and politics. She studied creative writing at Simon Fraser University.
