Marilyn Bowering’s new poems
July 31st, 2019
Marilyn Bowering launches her new poetry collection, What is Long Past Occurs in Full Light (Mother Tongue $21) on August 9 at 7:30 pm in Victoria at the Cricket Pavilion in Beacon Hill Park.
Equally at home writing novels as she is writing poetry, Bowering was put in the company of Canada’s most renowned literary figures – Brian Moore, Neil Bissoondath, Margaret Atwood, Mordecai Richler, Robertston Davies and Alice Munro – by a Scottish Journalist (Tom Adair of Scotland on Sunday) when she released her first novel.
She has since received many awards for both her poetry and novel writing including: the Pat Lowther Award, the Dorothy Livesay Prize, the Ethel Wilson Prize and several National Magazine awards. In 1999, she was shortlisted for Britain’s prestigious Orange Prize and she has been nominated twice for Governor General’s Awards.
At this latest poetry reading event, Bowering will be joined by novelist Michael Elcock for Eyes of Rain and Ragged Dreams: Coming of Age in Edinburgh (Muckle Knock $15).
From publicity for the co-launch event:
What is Long Past Occurs in Full Light
These poems awaken transformative interconnections between literature, ecology, civilization, history and individual study. A story of philosophical and spirit renewal from various points of view–from vanished figures from a Victoria childhood, to missing the companionship of a family dog, to authors such as Gogol, Akhmatova and a Gaelic bard.

Set in Edinburgh in the seminal 1960’s, this rich, coming-of-age novel takes us back to an era of innocence and decency: transporting the reader to a time of experiment and discovery, ambiguity and longing—laughter and tears. Available on Amazon and on Audible as an Audiobook.
