Cindy Gauthier

Established in 2016 to recognize excellence in Canadian self-publishing, the Whistler Independent Book Awards offers prizes in two categories: fiction and non-fiction. There are three finalists in each category (fiction and non-fiction), with the winners being announced at the annual Whistler Writers Festival.

Last year, Cindy Gauthier’s Charlie LeBeau & The Gambler’s Promise (FriesenPress $31.49) won the prize for fiction. In her first book in a YA historical trilogy, 14-yearold Charlee LeBeau works with her father in 1858 at the Sonoma Ranch when she is offered a trip to San Francisco by her rich uncle, a professional gambler.

Laesa Faith Kim

The winner of the 2020 non-fiction prize was for Can’t Breathe (Paradox $20) about the nuances of life with a special-needs child.

Jointly administered by the Whistler Writing Society, Canadian Authors and Vivalogue Publishing, the Whistler Independent Book Awards (WIBAs) provide independent authors with the opportunity to have their work recognized through a juried process typically reserved for trade-published titles.

In supporting independent authors, this competition is unique in that each and every entry receives a valuable, constructive critique of their submission, which can be quoted for publicity and promotional purposes.

The Whistler Independent Book Awards are sponsored by The Writers’ Union of Canada.
