Victoria Book Prizes open

April 22nd, 2024

Submissions are now open for the 2024 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize and the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize, each offering a $5,000 cash award.

The Butler Book Prize, established in 2004 in partnership with Brian Butler of Butler Brothers Supplies, honors the best book in fiction, literary non-fiction, or poetry by a local author. Meanwhile, the Children’s Book Prize, sponsored by the city, recognizes outstanding literature for children or youth.

Eligible submissions must have been published between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, and must be new works, not reissues or revisions. The deadline for entries is May 24, 2024, with award recipients announced at a fall gala event.

The Victoria Book Prize Society, a volunteer-run organization, oversees the prizes, establishes criteria, appoints juries, and manages the competitions. Two independent juries from the literary arts community evaluate submissions.

The society acknowledges the support of various organizations, including the City of Victoria, Butler Brothers Supplies, Union Club of British Columbia, Magnolia Hotel and Spa, Chateau Victoria, Friesens Corporation, CBC Radio, and Greater Victoria Public Library.
