From 1898 to 1957, before reliable roads reached the region, Kootenay Lake residents depended on passenger sternwheelers to connect them with work, school and medical care. Victoria-born transportation historian and heritage consultant Robert D. Turner has published his twentieth book, The Paddlewheeler SS Moyie: The Sweetheart of Kootenay Lake (Harbour $44.95) about this period of gracious travel. The illustrated vessel biography (with 250 photos) recounts the history of the world’s oldest intact passenger sternwheeler and the community-wide campaign to preserve it. Turner is Curator Emeritus at the Royal BC Museum, a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Simon Fraser University. 9781998526819
