Road to Bard
June 16th, 2026

On Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m., Bard on the Beach will host a launch event for Christopher Gaze’s memoir, The Road to Bard: A Legacy of Shakespeare on Canada’s West Coast (Harbour Publishing $40). The event will take place on the BMO Mainstage at Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park, with the festival village opening at 6:30 p.m.
The evening will feature a reading from the book followed by a conversation and audience Q&A hosted by urban planner Larry Beasley.
Admission is free, although capacity is limited and advance registration is required by June 15, 2026.
In The Road to Bard, Gaze reflects on a theatrical career spanning more than five decades. The memoir traces his journey from England’s Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to Canada in 1975 and chronicles the founding and growth of Bard on the Beach, which has become one of the country’s largest Shakespeare festivals. Along the way, he shares stories from his life on and off the stage, including fundraising efforts, acting roles, unexpected jobs and the challenges of leading the company through the COVID-19 shutdown.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event and Christopher Gaze will sign books following the program. 9781998526284
