Rachel Rose & Ayelet Tsabari

November 12th, 2024

BC poet Rachel Rose (at right) will be conversing with author Ayelet Tsabari, about her debut novel Songs for the Brokenhearted (HarperCollins $25.99), on November 14, at the Jewish Community Centre, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, as part of the JCC Jewish Book Festival.

Tsabari’s heroine, Zohara, is a young Yemeni Israeli woman living in New York who sets out to return to Israel after her mother’s death. She embarks on a poignant journey through her family’s past, uncovering her mother Saida’s secret romance with Yaqub in 1950. Amidst the chaos of Yemeni Jews immigrating to Israel, Yaqub, a shy young man, and Saida, a beautiful married woman, fall in love in an overcrowded immigrant camp. Despite societal norms and Saida’s marital status, their love blossoms. Zohara’s return to Israel leads her to shocking family secrets, including the dangers faced by impressionable young men and truths that challenge her understanding of her heritage and future. Through this journey, she discovers the deep, unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, and reevaluates everything she thought she knew about her parents and herself.

Copies of this book will be available for purchase on that day, and the author will be signing.
