New book launch and reading

September 19th, 2024

M.A.C. Farrant, will launch the 20th anniversary edition of her memoir, My Turquoise Years (Talonbooks $21.95) on October 10th at Small Gods Brewing in Sidney, BC. During the event, author Barbara Black will also be reading from her latest book, Little Fortified Stories (Caitlin Press, 2024) and the event will be introduced by fiction writer, Pauline Holdstock.

In My Turquoise Years, Marion Farrant (who now goes by M.A.C. Farrant) reflects on her fourteenth summer in 1960, capturing the contrast between her carefree life on Vancouver Island and the glamorous world of her mother, Nancy. Raised by her aunt and uncle in the small coastal town of Cordova Bay, Marion’s life changes when her distant, sophisticated mother, who lived aboard cruise ships and in Australia, unexpectedly announces a visit. Through witty and affectionate storytelling, Farrant explores themes of family, identity, and adolescence against the backdrop of mid-20th-century pop culture, including the Three Stooges, plastic, and turquoise-colored “everything.” Her memoir is a humorous and nostalgic account of a pivotal moment in her coming-of-age.
