Love and grandmothers is all you need

Powered by Love: A Grandmothers’ Movement to End AIDS in Africa will soon be published by Goose Lane on Oct. 10.
Victoria Grandmothers for Africa is sponsoring the local launch on November 7 of an illustrated book, Powered by Love, which tells the story of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s work against AIDS in Africa.
Guests at the free events can meet the co-author, Joanna Henry, and Gladys, one of the South Africa’s Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS, and Lisbie Rae, a Victoria grandmother who is featured in the illustrated book after her trip to Swaziland.
For 11 years Canadians have been helping raise money to support grandparents in Africa who are caring for their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren. From fashion shows to bike rides, dinners to craft sales, local Grandmothers and grandmothers have been helping provide medicines, schooling, job preparation and love. In Victoria alone, the Grandmothers have raised $1 million in 10 years.
The Victoria launch is Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Central Library (free parking underground after 6 p.m.) with book sales provided by Munro’s.
The St. Andrew’s Grandmothers Helping African Grandmothers will unveil the book at 2 p.m. at 9691 Fourth Street, Sidney. Tanner’s Books is handling their sales.
The book will retail for $35 and all royalties will go to organizations run by and for African grandmothers of AIDS orphans.

Powered by Love: A Grandmothers’ Movement to End AIDS in Africa draws on hundreds of interviews with grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa, Canada and the UK, to tell the story of this movement from the perspective of grandmothers themselves.
