Author Gabrielle Prendergast’s latest novel, The Anxious Exile of Sara Salt (Orca $14.95) follows Sara, who has selective mutism and struggles with new places. Sara’s mom and stepdad send her to Toronto to stay with her half-sister, Abby, who lives in a unique storage container house and aims to create a community for unhoused people. Her premature baby brother, Birdy, is often on her mind, so she writes him letters about her life. Within her letters, she talks about finding ways to communicate, like passing notes to the librarian and talking to dogs at a homeless encampment as a way of meeting their owners. When she learns the mayor and police are making life difficult for the unhoused, Sara becomes an advocate through her letters, discovering there are many ways to make her voice heard. 9781459838895
