“Because the spectacle of her murder overwhelms the entirety of her perfectly human and unremarkable existence, I lost my mother as a way of creating meaning,” says Colleen Brown, as she debuts her revolutionised take of a memoir, If you lie down in a field, she will find you there (Radiant $20.00). Brown aims to reclaim her mother Doris’ life, which has been masked by her sudden death at the hands of a serial killer. With interviews Brown conducted with her sister and other relatives, she tells us who Doris was through essays and spoken word anecdotes. Colleen Brown is primarily known as a sculptor. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver and an MFA from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. 9781989274941
