BC Author funds poetry grant

July 16th, 2024

The Writers’ Trust of Canada has received a new $1.5 million endowment from BC writer DC Reid, creating the DC Reid Poets’ Grant. This fund will distribute eight annual $5,000 grants to Canadian poets of modest means over the next ten years. The grant is aimed at poets who have published at least two books and earned less than $30,000 in the previous year. Applications are evaluated anonymously based on literary excellence and financial need.

DC Reid, a former president of the League of Canadian Poets and twice shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, expressed that the grant is meant to give poets financial relief so they can focus on their art. His works include the 1995 novel The Knife Behind the Gills and the 2022 memoir A Man and His River.

The submission window for the 2024 DC Reid Poets’ Grant is open until September 9. Below are the eligibility requirements:

  • A professional writer with at least two published books of poetry
  • Earned less than $30,000 from all income sources in the previous tax year.
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada.
  • Actively working on a literary project of poetry.
