September 06th, 2021

Dr. Jonathan Berkowitz is a UBC professor of statistics perhaps better known as the Word Guy on CBC Radio’s North by Northwest where he shares his lifelong passion for words, word puzzles and wordplay.

As part of the Jewish Book Festival, Dr. Berkowitz will be launching his new book, The Whirl of Words: Puzzling Past and Present (FriesenPress $25.99). The event will be held at the Jewish Community Centre on Thursday, October 7, when Dr. Berkowitz will be in conversation with Heather Glassman Berkowitz.

From publicity for his book: “Why do word puzzles fascinate us? How do they help develop problem-solving skills? How do they teach us about geography, literature, sports, and popular culture? How are they an international language? Jonathan Berkowitz offers a brief history of wordplay, with insights into puzzles and the brain. The Whirl of Words is a unique, rich, and intriguing tour of a wide variety of word puzzles certain to stimulate a brain work-out.”
