Brad Sills never got drafted by the Tracy family’s International Rescue organization, as envisioned by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in Thunderbirds, but he has been answering calls for help with Whistler Search and Rescue since 1976. In Echoes on the Wind: Fifty Years of Search and Rescue in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains (Harbour $36.95), Sills chronicles a career spent rescuing hikers and responding to river emergencies and avalanches, while helping develop rescue methods and train teams. His book opens up the wider story of the Whistler community and the decisions rescuers face when lives are at risk.
