21st Writer in Residence announced
September 10th, 2025

Vancouver Public Library has named poet Selina Boan as the 2025 Writer in Residence, marking the 21st year of the program dedicated to celebrating Canadian writing and literature.
Boan, a white-nehiyaw (Cree) writer, beadwork artist and educator, is the author of Undoing Hours (Nightwood, 2021), winner of the 2022 Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the Indigenous Voices Award for Published Poetry in English. Her work has appeared widely, including in Best Canadian Poetry (2018 and 2020). A poetry editor for CV2 Magazine, Boan is also working on her new fantasy novel.
This fall, while at VPL, Boan will lead writing consultations and workshops for aspiring writers, while advancing her own creative projects. Upcoming events include:
Writing the Everyday: Journaling as Creative Practice (Sept. 11)
Point of View in Fiction (Oct. 2)
Anything is Possible: Experiments in Revision for Poetry (Oct. 16).
Boan’s teaching philosophy emphasizes anti-colonial education and the importance of fostering community, connection and reciprocity. “I believe these qualities are at the heart of meaningful learning and creative practices,” she says.
The Writer in Residence program is made possible with the support of the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library.
