Whistler Writing Society Events

March 26th, 2024

The Whistler Writing Society is hosting an Open Mic Night featuring Leanne Dunic, author of One and Half of You (Talonbooks, 2021), The Gift (Book*hug Press, 2019), and To Love the Coming End (Book*hug Press, 2017). This event will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 7:00 pm onwards at the Whistler Public Library. The event will serve as a platform for many local established and aspiring writers to share their own writing or poetry. Dunic is set to read from her most recent poetry book, Wet (Talonbooks $21.95).

Wet follows a Chinese American model who moves around and works in Singapore. She thirsts for things like fair treatment at work, stopping forest fires nearby, clean air, safe homes for animals, and human connection, but they seem impossible to get. While she watches other migrant workers working outside in dangerous conditions, the book shows pictures and uses words filled with understanding and wanting to talk about issues like social differences, sexual privation and environmental disasters.

The organizers will also be holding The Whistler Writing Society Fundraiser Book Sale on that day, for any interested participants to choose their next read from an array of books from their previous festivals and events.
