Thomas Girard launches debut memoir

September 19th, 2024

Massy Books and Thomas Girard (at right) will be hosting Girard’s memoir launch, Son of Greg Girard (self-published, $42.14), in conversation with Angela Fama. The event will be held on October 16, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, at Massy Books, Vancouver.

In his book, Girard recounts arriving at Phnom Penh airport late at night with his father, a well-known photographer, and using the Visa on Arrival service. After being stamped through by a man in a makeshift booth, they struggle to find a hotel, rejecting the first one due to its eerie atmosphere. This trip occurred in the late ’90s or early 2000s, when the author didn’t know his father well, but it became a significant bonding memory.

Thomas Girard’s father, Greg Girard

He recalls various trips to China and Hong Kong that shaped their perspective, including a long journey in southern China without cameras, which was unusual for his father. The narrative also touches on Jonathan, a family friend who adapted to life in Hong Kong, mastering Mandarin and establishing a career in the art world, eventually joining Art Basel (a for-profit, privately owned and managed, international art fair staged annually in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Paris).
