MacKay’s book, The Forgotten: A Novel of the Korean War (Now Or Never Publishing Co $26.95) follows nineteen-year-old Charlie Black, who, in 1950, joins the Canadian Army’s Special Force to prove himself to his father. As part of the United Nations defending South Korea, Charlie leaves behind his family and girlfriend. After rigorous training, he is separated from his battalion but rejoins them in time to witness a tragic rail disaster. Assigned to 13 Platoon, a group of misfits led by Corporal Frenchy, Charlie’s comrades are young and eager but underprepared. Upon arriving in Korea, the mission shifts as China enters the war, and the battalion is thrust into intense combat, turning their role into a fight for survival. 9781989689752
