New book launch event!

August 01st, 2024

The Pages Resort and Marina in Gabriola is hosting the book launch of author Sheila Harrington’s (at right) latest book, Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea (Heritage House $34.95). The event will take place at the Gabriola library on August 3, 2024, at 2 pm.

The book offers a compelling collection of stories about the creation of local nature conservancies on seventeen Salish Sea islands from the 1990s to the present. Through a three-year sailing journey, Harrington interviews over fifty veteran conservationists, detailing the rise of these conservancies amidst threats from logging and development. The book provides an in-depth view of local protests, legal battles and the evolution of conservancies, illustrating how local, provincial and national support was secured. It highlights the collaborative efforts of dedicated locals, resulting in hundreds of new protected areas and the Gulf Island National Park Reserve. Filled with color photos, maps, and first-hand accounts from conservation heroes, this book shows how grassroot movements can transform ecological futures and inspire action in the face of climate change and species extinction.
