In The HBC Brigades: Culture, conflict and perilous journeys of the fur trade (Ronsdale $24.95) by Nancy Marguerite Anderson, the rugged men and resilient packhorses of the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) navigate the treacherous landscapes of 19th-century British Columbia to open up the fur trade. Their thousand-mile journey to remote trading posts was fraught with peril, from mountainous terrain to fierce river crossings. The HBC brigades also contended with First Nations communities, who were torn between resisting and assisting the fur traders as they built trails over Indigenous routes. Anderson focuses on the particularly disastrous journey to Fort Langley, triggered by the devastating Cayuse War of 1847. 9781553807018
