Maddy’s Sash (Gabriel Dumont Inst. $17.50), by Marion Gonneville, with illustrations by Kate Boyer, is the story of a young girl who connects with her Métis roots while she spends time with her Moshôm, Kohkom and their special dog Max (who talks to Maddy). Maddy’s adventures include visiting her grandparent’s farm in northern Saskatchewan, picking berries, canoeing, and going to a barn dance where she learns to jig. Gonneville, a great-granddaughter of Northwest Resistance fighters and a 7th generation Michif, studied Creative Writing at UBC. She teaches jigging and Métis history in schools, colleges and Métis associations around BC. She lives in Vancouver. 9781988011356
