Gary Geddes at hybrid poetry reading

June 20th, 2023

Derek Beaulieu of Banff, Alberta and Gary Geddes of Thetis Island, BC will read from their recent poetry collections at Fairleigh Dickinson University Auditorium on June 21 at 7:30 pm. (see details below in poster, Poets Corner.)

Geddes will be promoting his two new books The Ventriloquist: Poetic Narratives from the Womb of War (Rock’s Mills Press, 2021) and The Oysters I Bring to Banquets (Guernica, 2022).

Beaulieu was the 2014-2016 Poet Laureate of Calgary and is the current 2022-2024 Poet Laureate of Banff. He works extensively around issues of community and poetics.

The Oysters I Bring to Banquets is a collection of lyrics and poem-sequences that ranges from whimsical poems about the building of a greenhouse to the struggle of characters in classical legends to cope with the interference of close relatives and extended family, the gods. There are also poems about Yukon adventures; the wonders and plight of monarch butterflies in Mexican highlands; a diverse gathering of elegies for friends, literary luminaries, creatures and natural habitats in a world under siege; and a series of hymns to art, beauty, human dignity and endurance.

The Ventriloquist is a scathing indictment of war and its ravages. It’s also a testament to the power of poetic narrative.
