A rat, tired of being shooed away and missing out on the peanuts given to squirrels, decides to become more “squirrel-ish” to fit in. He tries adjusting his posture and even creates various squirrel-like tails out of cotton balls, feathers and spaghetti, but none work until he crafts a convincing tail from straw. With his new tail, Rat finally gets his peanut, but when dogs chase him, he realizes why squirrels scamper so much. In Bambi Edlund’s book for ages 4-7, Squirrel-ish (Owlkids $21.95), due out in September, Rat learns to appreciate his own tail and embrace who he is. The story is humorously illustrated and carries a message of self-acceptance, reminding readers that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. 9781771475174
