Set against the backdrop of WWII, Rainor Schacht had no idea of the dark reality about to descend upon him when he and his friends boarded a bus to the ward for disabled children in a remote hospital which is under Nazi control. He survives and years later, with the help of a coded diary, Rainor searches for Emmi, a fellow survivor who helped him find purpose amid the deadly “Akiton T4,” a grim Nazi program targeting disabled individuals for euthanasia. (Modern estimates suggest 300,000 people were killed under Aktion T4.) Andrew Boden’s novel, When We Were Ashes (Goose Lane Editions $24.95) follows Rainor’s journey to uncover the truths of his past and his present, revealing both the chilling realities of life and the resilience of the human spirit.  9781773103365
