The Lowry Walk

July 08th, 2026

The Deep Cove Heritage Society and the Elders Council for Parks will present The Lowry Walk on Tuesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Cates Park (Whey-ah-Wichen), offering participants a chance to explore one of British Columbia’s most significant literary landscapes.

Led by author and historian Trevor Carolan, the 90-minute guided walk follows the Malcolm Lowry Trail to the site where the English novelist lived and worked in a waterfront shack for nearly 15 years while writing and revising his celebrated novel, Under the Volcano. Along the way, Carolan will share stories about Lowry and other writers connected to the area, including Earle Birney, Dorothy Livesay, Chief Dan George, Lee Maracle and Al Neil.

The free community event begins beside the historic Dollar Mill beehive burner in east Little Cates Park. The walking route is generally level with minor changes in elevation and washroom facilities are available at both ends of the trail.
