Demotopia Launch at UBC

April 08th, 2026

Sung Ming Chow will launch his new novel Demotopia: An Exploration of Democracy and Artificial Intelligence (Electromagnetic Print $26.95) on April 11 at The Original Beanery Coffee House (2706 Fairview Cres, Vancouver, BC V6T 2C2).

Hosted in a Philosophy Café-style format, the event will feature an author presentation and guest participants from the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop, Society for Our Grandmother Earth and Electromagnetic Print.

Set in the fictional V-Port, Demotopia follows a group of international students navigating identity, displacement and belonging while engaging deeply with political theory and emerging technologies. Through dialogue, lectures and imagined exchanges with both historical thinkers and artificial intelligence, the novel examines whether democratic systems can evolve in diverse, migrant societies—and what role AI might play in shaping that future.

A sociologist and former university lecturer in Hong Kong, Chow relocated to Vancouver amid political pressures and continues his work at the intersection of social theory, activism and cross-cultural dialogue. His novel reflects contemporary concerns around diaspora, civic participation and the increasing influence of algorithmic systems on public life.

The launch will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University of British Columbia, inviting readers, thinkers and community members to engage in a conversation about the future of democracy. 9781067407704
