Lindi Nolte at Kogawa House

Historic Joy Kogawa House welcomes South African–Canadian spoken word poet Lindi Nolte as its Writer in Residence from March 7 to March 30, offering a series of workshops and readings for Vancouver’s writing community.

Active in the city’s spoken word scene since 2014, Nolte became Vancouver Grand Slam Champion in 2018. A TEDx speaker and creative writing educator, she is the author of Barefoot & Awestruck, a poetry collection exploring migration, nature and healing. In 2022, she served as Writer-in-Residence for the City of Richmond, mentoring emerging writers and leading community workshops.


During her residency at Historic Joy Kogawa House, Nolte will develop new work while hosting several public events designed to bring writers and readers together. All events will take place in person at the house with online participation available via Zoom.

Writer’s Circle
March 22 | 12:00–2:30pm
A supportive space for writers to share works in progress and receive constructive feedback. The session includes guided prompts, writing exercises and discussion about creative practice.

The Art of Spoken Word: Voice & Embodiment
March 26 | 7:00–8:30pm
An interactive workshop exploring performance techniques, including voice, body language and presence. Participants will experiment with delivering their own written work and building confidence on stage.

Poetry Reading: An Evening of Words and Connection
March 28 | 2:00–4:00pm
A curated reading of new work reflecting on themes of motherhood, identity and personal transformation, followed by conversation and audience engagement.

Nolte will also host the house’s Tuesday Night Writing Group during her residency and lead a Poetry Jam on March 19.
