Idris Hall (1906–1996), aka Aloha Wanderwell, was a statuesque explorer and film star raised in North Vancouver, Duncan and Qualicum, who has
been dubbed the first woman to travel around the world by car, which she did from 1922–25. She faced a firing squad in Russia; drove across Africa and China; briefly lived with Amazon tribes; shook hands with Mussolini and flirted with Hollywood royalty. Her husband Walter Wanderwell, a WW1 spy, the man behind the car trip adventure, was mysteriously murdered on their yacht. Others have written about Aloha and now Victoria-based Laurel Corona has released her take on the adventuress in the creative non-fiction title, Aloha Wanderwell Takes the Wheel (Sibylline $20). 9798897409426
