Campbell River’s Stephen L. Howard has completed a compilation of autobiographical stories in his recent work, Cane Wood (Friesen Press $22.99). He takes readers through his experiences over five decades beginning at a tender age when he experiences his grandmother’s death. Later stories recount his first fist fight at the age of 12 and his first manual job as a young man. The work stories continue, chronicling Howard’s experiences between training, physical labour, office work and a return to physical work. The stories are all intensely male, focusing mainly on work and aggression. 9781038326300
