Squamish Nation wins Book Award

October 01st, 2025

The City of Vancouver has announced the Squamish Nation as the winner of the 2025 City of Vancouver Book Award for their powerful book Tiná7 Cht Ti Temíxw: We Come From This Land: A Walk Through the History of the Squamish People (Page Two $35).

The award recognizes excellence in any literary genre and this year’s jury—Hari Alluri, Tina May and Carolyn Nakagawa—praised the book as “a heft of achievement… carrying millennia within its pages: ancient stories, colonial devastation, rigorous reclamation and contemporary expressions of culture.” They described it as “a crucial and stellar document—an artistic treasure to return to gratefully over and again.”

The book offers an accessible and richly illustrated history of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) People, tracing stories from ancient times through colonization and into the present day. Published one hundred years after the amalgamation of several communities into the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Tiná7 Cht Ti Temíxw highlights resilience, reclamation and cultural continuity rooted in the land and waters of Sḵwx̱wú7meshulh Temíx̱w (Squamish People’s Territory).

The Squamish Nation is an innovative Indigenous government of more than 4,100 people, dedicated to protecting its air, land and water while ensuring a sustainable future. This award-winning book reflects that ongoing commitment by honouring the past while charting a course forward for generations to come. 9781774583920
