Horticulturalist and arboriculturist Collin Varner brings more than four decades of experience to Plants of Greater Victoria: A Wanderer’s Guide (Heritage House $26.95), a full-colour guide to hundreds of wild plants found across the capital region, from Victoria and Oak Bay to Sooke, Metchosin, Langford, Saanich and Sidney. Covering wildflowers, berries, ferns, shrubs, marine plants and selected invasive species, the book provides identification details, taxonomic origins, traditional uses and viewing locations. Varner previously worked at UBC’s Botanical Garden, where he helped conserve 25,000 trees and taught native plant studies. 9781772035667
