Cee Peal at VPL

March 04th, 2026

Vancouver Public Library has named Cee Peal its 2026 Indigenous Storyteller in Residence, continuing a program established in 2008 to recognize Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the central role of storytelling in cultural knowledge and exchange.

A theatre artist from the Nisga’a First Nation of Northern BC, Peal works in Vancouver on the traditional, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish peoples. His multidisciplinary practice spans acting, directing, writing, dance and production. He also serves as Indigenous outreach coordinator at The Cultch and artistic associate at The Carmen Arts Group.

The Indigenous Storyteller in Residence program reflects VPL’s commitment to centring Indigenous knowledge systems and fostering intercultural understanding through public programming. Storytelling within the residency may take many forms, from theatre and writing to image-making and community dialogue.

“In this residency, my biggest hope is curiosity,” says Peal. “I hope that I get to destabilize the notion that people understand what Indigenous means.”
