In her deeply personal and scholarly work Wearing a Broken Indigene Heart on the Sleeve of Christian Mission (CMU Press $34.00), Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne explores what remains life-giving in Christian theology after generations of harm to Indigenous communities. Lansdowne centres intercultural theology as a method of truth-telling and transformation, rather than positioning Indigenous faith as a question of assimilation or rejection. The book offers both a critique of Christian mission and a vision for new relationships, ones in which the church itself might be changed through Indigenous presence and leadership. Lansdowne is the first Indigenous woman elected Moderator of the United Church of Canada, a role she assumed in 2022. A member of the Heiltsuk First Nation, she was born in Alert Bay and formerly served as executive director of the First United Church Community Ministry Society in Vancouver. 9781987986181
