July 30th, 2025

The 2025 Whistler Independent Book Awards (WIBA) has announced its finalists ahead of the upcoming Whistler Writers Festival, taking place from October 30 to November 2. Among those recognized are several British Columbia authors across non-fiction and children’s literature categories.
In non-fiction, Kim Hudson is a finalist for The Bridge: Connecting the Powers of Linear and Circular Thinking, a work exploring dual approaches to understanding and problem-solving. Carolyn Roberts is also shortlisted for Re-Storying Education: Decolonizing Your Practice Using a Critical Lens.
In the children’s category, Trevor Atkins (pictured at right) is nominated for The Day the Pirates Went Mad, the first title in the Emma Sharpe’s Adventure series. The book presents a historical narrative with a focus on young characters navigating a maritime setting. Anna McCarthy is recognized for Message in a Bottle, a story framed as a journey guided by themes of hope and resilience.
WIBA provides independently published authors with an opportunity for their work to be considered through a juried process. The winners of this year’s awards will be announced during the Whistler Writers Festival.
