Indigenous artist wins GG Award

November 06th, 2025

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced the 2025 Governor General’s Literary Awards (GGBooks) winners, recognizing the most notable Canadian titles. We are thrilled to highlight the win in the Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books category for This Land is a Lullaby (Orca Book $21.95), celebrating the talent of BC illustrator Delreé Dumont and Orca Book Publishers. 9781459836099

About Delreé Dumont, also known by her traditional name Wâpiski Kihéw Esquao (White Eagle Woman), is an artist, storyteller and community advocate. Her artistic mission is deeply committed to celebrating her Cree heritage and fostering respect for the natural world.

Dumont’s artwork, which is influenced by the wisdom of ancient mountains and her role as a traditional pow wow dancer, utilizes a meticulous pointillism technique. This style sees each dot on her canvas as a thread woven into a larger story of cultural reverence, resulting in a captivating blend of realism and dreamlike elements.

The winning book, This Land is a Lullaby, written by Tonya Simpson, was praised by the peer assessment committee for its lyricism, noting that “Words like precious jewels are reflected by the sparkling illustrations”.
