Kim Spencer has followed up her multi-award-winning middle-grade debut novel about a young Indigenous girl, Mia, growing up in Prince Rupert in the 1980s, Weird Rules to Follow (Orca, 2022), with I Won’t Feel This Way Forever (Orca $14.95). Mia is now painfully adjusting to life without her ex-best friend, Lara. Life at home has her learning to jar salmon and watching TV. Suddenly her grandmother, whom Mia adores, becomes very ill and has to go to a hospital in Vancouver. Mia is taken with her mom and aunties to live in a motel near the hospital to be close at hand. She also joins a basketball camp, a game Mia has played before and enjoys. With the help of a coach at the camp, she regains her confidence. But Mia has to face the impending death of her grandmother and what life will be like without her. Spencer is from the Gitxaala Nation in northwest BC and now lives in Vancouver. She has a picture book about a girl visiting her First Nation’s reserve scheduled for release in March 2026, Springtime in Kitkatla (Orca), with illustrations by Karlene Harvey. 9781774887806
